Spines of Daphnia lumholtzi create feeding difficulties for juvenile bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus)

Received on November 12, 1995; accepted on January 16, 1996 Juvenile bluegill sunfish were fed either adult Daphnia lumholtzi or similar sized Daphnia magna. The number of Daphnia eaten and the number rejected were counted for three fish size classes (20–35 mm). Bluegill (26–35 mm) rejected more D.lumholtzi than similar sized D.magna. All size classes of fish ate fewer D.lumholtzi than D.magna. The spines of D.lumholtzi presented greater ingestion difficulties to the smallest bluegill.
