Laboratory studies on the larval growth and development of Nyctiphanes capensis (Euphausiacea)

S. Pillar

Sea Fisheries Institute, Department of Environment Affairs Private Bag X2, Rogge Bay, 8012 Cape Town, South Africa

Received on May 1, 1984; accepted on December 1, 1984 Larvae of Nyctiphanes capensis Hansen were reared in the laboratory under different trophic conditions (i.e., algal, animal and mixed diets) from the second calyptopis stage to the first juvenile stage. It is demonstrated that diet is important in determining growth rates and development of the larvae. The highest growth rates were achieved on diets of Artemia nauplii mixed with either the flagellate Tetraselmis or Pseudodiaptomus nauplii. Poorer dietary conditions such as with the diatom Phaeodactylum yielded slower growth rates where additional moults were needed to complete furcilia development. Under favourable trophic conditions the intermoult period was 4–6 days and was not age dependent. Three dominant pathways of pleopod development were found in healthy individuals.
