Received on February 1, 1985; accepted on June 1, 1985 From ichthyoplankton samples taken in southern Biscay in March/April 1983, a total of 79 larvae of Gadiculus argenteus argenteus Guichenot (1850) were found. These larvae ranged in size from 2.3 to 19.0 mm (standard length). Larvae of this subspecies had not previously been recorded from Biscay and descriptions of the larval development from other areas are scarce. Drawings and a description of the larvae of this common species are given to facilitate identification and to avoid possible confusion with other species, in particular G. argenteus thori Schmidt (1903) and Merluccius merluccius.
